History in the USMC

Corporal Montemayor joined the Marine Corps in September 2001. After recruit training, he attended the School of Infantry and earned the military occupational specialty as an infantryman. His first assignment was as a machine gunner for Company B, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines. In 2003, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Commendation

Corporal Montemayor was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for his life-saving actions while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on March 23, 2003. Without hesitation, he ran across a danger area and exposed himself to enemy fire, to assist a drowning Marine. His selfless initiative and courageous actions saved another Marine.
