The Marine Corps at the Bayou Classic

MARINES AT THE BAYOU CLASSIC 2:37

Male 1:
This is a community that was devastated by Katrina, Hurricane Katrina, and we’ve all got to work together to rebuild and help out our neighbors. That’s what life is all about.

Female 1:
Now that I’m back home I’m really excited to be a part of what’s going on today with the Marine Corps and all the other volunteers.

Female 2:
The Marines are a great resource for us in this area; every time that we need them, they come running and it’s been a true blessing to be able to have them around.

Male Marine 1:
We are not only dedicated to the community but it shows we are dedicated all over the nation. We are in all different places doing different types of things.

Female 3:
I am an art teacher at Abrahamson and after Hurricane Katrina when everything was just so bleak, we came to a school that was still flooded. It was white and grey and ugly—it looked like a prison. I didn’t know that the Marines were coming today but as soon as they showed up, I was like, you know this is what it’s all about.

Female 4:
My family’s here and we all lost our homes and all of our things. People like the Marines have come in droves to help us out and we really appreciate. Just having the school close again because we had to go out of our neighborhood but just having it back in the community is wonderful.

Female Marine 2:
It makes me feel really good to be out here helping to beautify the school.

Female 5:
Normally when you see the Marines, it’s a hard-core kind of thing but just having them come out here with smiling faces, wanting to paint and do whatever—whatever needs to be done to get done.

Female Marine 3:
When you get your young adults involved, that seed is planted early so that it can continue on from generation to generation.

Male 1:
Part of leadership is giving back and helping to improve the lives of others.

Female 1:
Everyone is dedicated to the cause.

Male Marine 2:
One of the things that everybody did was to sacrifice their Thanksgiving in order to benefit somebody else.

Female 6:
And I think that flows over to the young kids that we see out here tonight. The Marines are here. That’s right. The few, the proud, the Marines.

Female 3:
That’s why you become a Marine. Because you know it’s important to give back to the people around you.

Female 1:
We need to get out there and serve the community that we work and live in.

Female 5:
It’s just a joy to know that people can come together to build homes, to build schools.

Male 1:
And help to give back. It just basically shows character. It shows that we all care for each other. I think that’s the real lesson we can’t forget, that we’re all in this together.
