America's Marines in New York
AMERICA’S MARINES IN NY (Ep 104) 3:56
Female 1:
You’re seeing the Marine Corps as you’re walking up into Times Square. They’re here. They care. They want to come to New York City. They want to support us here and that’s why I got up at 2:45 to come down here and support them.
Male 1:
It does bring a sense of security that’s heavily needed right now. Knowing that we got our brothers over here in the city making that stance for it and actually having a proper symbol for us gives a sense of peace for the people. So it’s a good thing for us.
Female 2:
I felt it would be remarkable to see this in Times Square, you know? This is America too.
Retired Marine 1:
There’s no more of an intensive training program than what the Marine Corps has. From the boot camp, you’re going to whatever your specialization is. You’re trained for that and it’s really intense training. If you can’t get through that thirteen weeks, you’re going to have trouble getting through life.
Mother 1:
When he came home and told me he had enlisted I said, “But college? What about college?” And he said, “Mom, to be honest, I’m not ready—I’m not ready to do it. This is what I need to do. I need this discipline. I need the structure. This is what I need to do. And I’ll go to college when I’m done.”
And he’s going to.
Mother 2:
My daughter’s already begun college courses in the Marines while she’s on active duty. In December she’ll have done four years, she’s not re-enlisting. So she plans to go to college then.
Retired Marine 2:
Because I joined the Marine Corps, I’ve been to Scotland, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hawaii, Guam, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Mombassa, Kenya, Diego Garcia, Perth, Australia and Colombo, Sri Lanka. I can’t deny they get an awful lot of good press but the Marine Corps deserves it.
Mother 3:
I think that in the Marine Corps there’s a history and a brotherhood that you just don’t find anywhere else. John’s service, as a family, brought us closer together and gave me a deeper understanding of this country, a greater pride in being an American but also just was the hardest but the best thing we’ve done.
Mother 4:
My son decided to join the Marines and I said, “Why did you join the Marines, why did you choose the Marines when there’s air force, navy, army. I’d be proud of you whatever you do.” And he said he chose the Marines because they’re the best.
Retired Marine 1:
Be proud to be a Marine. Be proud to be an American and be proud to serve your country. Once a Marine, always a Marine.
