I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967, right after graduating high school in 1966, and I enlisted for four years. And I think that was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Since I was in the Marine Corps, I have gone through college. Before—like I said—I almost didn’t get out of high school so I have gone through college. I’ve been working for the same company now for twenty-nine years, and now I’m an elected official on the San Leandro Board of Education. The Marine Corps instilled the pride—put back the pride—in myself, and what I was about. It provided me the discipline that I needed to better myself as an individual.
